Part 12 The truth about heaven and hell

  • What does Christianity teach about heaven and hell?

The Bible describes the place where God dwells as “heaven.”  In Matthew 6:9 Jesus taught the disciples to pray, “Our Father who are in heaven.”  Jesus is with the Father in heaven.  During the stoning of Stephen we read in Acts 7:55,But being full of the Holy Spirit, he [Stephen] gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;” The triune God dwells in heaven. Upon death all believers in the Jesus Christ will enter heaven.  Jesus told his disciples not to worry because, “In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” John 14:2-3.  Jesus was describing heaven to his disciples.  When followers of Christ die, they spend all eternity with Jesus in heaven.  It will be a place of great joy and celebration, living in the presence of God.

The Bible teaches non-believers are destined to hell.  After death there is no second chance to get to heaven. Hebrews 9:27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment…” Hell is described by the Bible as a place of eternal punishment.  In a parable in the book of Luke 16:19-31, Jesus graphically describes hell in detail.  “In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 “And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.'” (Luke 16:23-24)   Here Jesus gives us a picture of torment and agony in the fires of hell.  How long will the torment of hell last?  Jesus, talking about believers and non-believers, tells us in Matthew 25:46“These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” According to Jesus, punishment in hell is for all eternity.

All Mormons who continue to worship a false Jesus, a different Holy Spirit, and preach a false gospel will not be heaven when they die; they will spend eternity in hell.  This is why we need to reach Mormons for Christ.

Next I will look at what Mormons teach about heaven and hell.
