Intelligent Design as Science Part 1 Defining Intelligent Design

As a public school teacher I asked one of the science teachers at my school if he wanted to discuss science and the Bible.  He said he’d love to and we began meeting 2-3 days a week in his room during lunch.  John was athletic and was very intelligent.  He believed God was a myth and was a strong advocate for evolution.

We met for over a year, discussing God, the Bible, science, society, family, and other issues of importance.  After 5 months of discussion John looked me square in the eyes and said, “After reading your materials and the discussions we’ve had, I am more convinced than ever, that Christianity is false.”  So much for me being the “Bible Answer Man!”  He refused to give any ground when confronted by my evidence.  He strongly believed God had nothing to do with biological design or the creation of the universe.  Over the next few posts, I will present arguments for design that my friend refused to acknowledge.

Intelligent Design, as a discipline, is the study of the signs of intelligence.  It does not get into the mind of the designer.  Intelligent design says design is detectable.  Whereas creationism cares about the source of the universe and how the universe came into being, intelligent design does not try to identify the source.  Creationism has a religious commitment and intelligent design doesn’t.  SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) would be considered a branch of intelligent design.

I heard a speaker a few years ago, who titled his presentation with the words intelligent design and then spent the entire time attacking creationism.  He made no attempt at refuting the arguments for intelligent design.  This is common in the science community; to make a straw man argument by attaching religion and calling it intelligent design. In the process of doing this he gave the impression he was providing evidence against intelligent design.  This way he could completely avoid all the strong scientific arguments for design.

I will be making a scientific argument for intelligent design.  Even though when I usually make my case, I don’t identify the designer, for these posts I will.  In this series, I will argue for the Biblical God as the intelligent designer of the universe and biological organisms.
